Employers of working holiday makers to register with the ATO

If you employ working holiday makers (or intend to in 2017) please read below!

We note that at the time of writing the ATO were still dealing with their major system outage and the registration process was unavailable. The date for registration with the ATO has now been pushed back to 31 January 2017. The registration can be done on the ATO website and a link to the site is provided for your convenience below. Failure to register with the ATO will require you to withhold tax at 32.5% for the first $37,000 for your working holiday maker employees. We note that due to the passing of recent legislation in relation to the “Backpacker tax” employers of working holiday makers will, from 1 January 2017, be required to register their details with the ATO in order to be eligible to withhold tax at the lower withholding rate of 15%.
